Would you pay extra for coils if the foam layers are already high quality?

I'm a bigger guy (around 280 lbs) and I've been looking at mattresses. I see a lot of all-foam options with high-density layers that claim to support heavy sleepers. But then there are hybrid mattresses with coils that cost more. If the foam is already high quality, is it worth paying extra for coils? I'm worried about durability and sagging. Would love to hear from other heavy sleepers who've tried both.

I'm 6'2" and about 300 lbs. I had a high-quality all-foam mattress and it started sagging after 18 months. Switched to a hybrid with coils and it's been solid for 3 years. The coils seem to help distribute weight better and reduce that sinking feeling. For me, the extra cost was worth it.

What do you mean by high quality foam? Density matters. If it's 3lb+ memory foam or high-resilience polyfoam, it might hold up. But coils do add a different kind of support. It's not just about foam quality.

I'm not a heavy sleeper but my husband is around 250. We went with a hybrid because I wanted the bounce and he needed support. It's been great. But I think it depends on the mattress. Some hybbrids have cheap foam on top that fails anyway.

Coils can help with airflow too, which is a plus if you sleep hot. But if the foam is already breathable, maybe less of a factor.

I've tried both. All-foam felt like quicksand after a while. Hybrid gave me a more responsive feel. But I'm only 200 lbs. At 280, you might need the extra support form coils. Check the coil gauge and count if you go hybrid. Thicker gauge and more coils generally mean better support ngl.

Have you considered latex? Latex foam is very durable and supportive. Might be worth looking into if you're open to non-coil options.

Thanks for the replies. I'm leaning towards hybrid now. But I'm still curious: if the foam layers are high quality, wouldn't they be enough? Or do coils add something that foam cann't replicate? I guess I'm trying to justify the extra cost.

Coils add a spring-like support that foam doesn't have. Foam compresses, coils push back. For heavy sleepers, that pushback can prevent you from sinking too deep and causing pressure points. Plus, coils can extend the life of the foam by taking some of the the load.

Also, consider the base. A good foundation is crucial. Even the best mattress can sag if the foundation is weak.

If you do go hybrid, make sure the coil unit is heavy-duty. Some hybrids are designed for average weight and might not hold up for you. Look for ones with reinforced edges and higher coil counts.
