Motion Transfer

I'm a restless sleeper and keep running out of room

I'm a bigger guy, around 280 lbs, and I tend to toss and turn a lot at night. My current mattress is a queen and I keep feeling like I'm running out of space, especially since my partner is also a restless sleeper. I wake up several times a night because I've either rolled to the edge or my partner and I are basically wrestling for room. I'm looking at getting a king, but I'm worried about finding one that can handle my weight without sagging or making motion transfer worse for both of us. Any suggestions on what to look for in a mattress that can accommodate a heavy, restless sleeper? Also wondering if a king is worth the extra cost or if there's a better approach.

A king definitely gives you more room than a queen, but if you're both restless you might also consider a split king or two twin XLs pushed together. That way you each get your own space and if one of you moves it won't disturb the other much. Just make sure you get a heavy-duty frame that supports the extra weight.

My husband is about your size and we went with a king mattress from a company that specializes in heavy sleepers. It's been a game-changeR for us. We had a queen before and he was constantly waking up feeling like he was falling off. The king gave him enough room to stretch out without waking me. Make sure you check the weight capacity of the mattress itself, some standard ones aren't built for 280+ pounds.

What's your budget? That might influence the recommendation a lot. Also, do you have a preference for memory foam vs. innerspring? Some people find that hybrid mattresses handle motion transfer better for heavier sleepers because the coils provide support and the foam on top absorbs movement.

I had the same issue when I was around 300 lbs. I found that a latex mattress worked well for me because it's more supportive and doesn't develop deep body impressions like memory foam can. They're expensive but worth it if you can swing it. Also, a king is definitely worth it if you have the space.

Actually, I'd caution against going too soft. Heavy sleepers often need a firmer mattress to prevent sagging, but if you go too soft you'll bottom out and feel like you're sleeping in a ditch. I'd recommend looking for a medium-firm mattress with reinforced edges so you don't feel like you're sliding off when you roll to the side.

I second the reinforced edge thing. That's been a big problem with our current mattress. The edges are so soft that it feels like I'm gonna roll off if I get too close. So when you're shopping, try to test the edges if you can, or read reviews specifically mentioning edge support.

Have you considered an adjustable base? My partner and I are both restless and we got one with our king. It helps with things like snoring and acid reflux, but I also find that having the head slightly elevated reduces the feeling of being crowded. It's an extra cost though, but might be worth looking into if you're already spending on a king.

One more thing: if you're both restless, you might want to look at mattresses with good motion isolation. We got one with pocketed coils and foam, and it made a huge difference. I can get out of bed and my husband doesn't even stir. But with a king, you still have to deal with the edge issue if the mattress doesn't have good edge support.
