So my partner and I are both on the heavier side (combined ~500 lbs) and we currently have a queen. Getting in and out feels like a gymnastics routine, especially when one of us is already in bed. I keep hearing that a king gives you more room to maneuver, but is it actually easier to get in and out, or just wider? We're not looking to spend money on a downgrade in comfort. Anyone with first-hand experience?
Is a king mattress easier to get in and out of for bigger couples
King is wider, but the edge support matters way more than the size. We have a cheap king and the edge is mush, so getting out is still a slog.
Honestly, the bigger difference for us was a tall mattress (like 12+ inches) and a firm edge. We went from a queen to a king and it was only marginally easier until we got one with reinforced edges. Now it's a breeze. But yeah, just going wider didn't fix it alone.
You're overthinking it. Just roll off. Works every time.
^^ Not helpful. OP, we're around 450 combined, and upgraded to a king last year. It's much easier because you each have your own side and don't have to climb over each other. But you still need decent edge support if you sit on the side to put shoes on. I'd say yes, easier overall, but not magical.
Also, consider an adjustable base if you can swing it. Raising the head a bit makes it way easier to sit up and swing legs out. Not exacly what you asked, but it's a game changer for bigger folks.
Thanks all. So it sounds like king + firm edge + maybe a height boost. Any specific models that don't break the bank? We're not looking for luxury, just functional.
Check out the Titan by Brooklyn Bedding. It's built for heavier folks and has good edge support. We've had ours for two years, still solid.
Wait, do you mean getting in and out of bed, or getting the mattress in and out of the room? Because a king king is a beast to move around corners. We had to take a door off its hinges. Just saying.
Haha, good point. I meant getting in and out of bed. But noted for moving day.
Second the Titan. Also, if you go With a foam mattress, make sure it's a high-density one. Low-density foam will sag at the edges and you'll feel like you're climbing out of a hole.
Or just get a crane installed above the bed. Very elegant.
One more thing: foundation height. If your bed frame is low, it's harder on the knees. We put ours on a higher frame and it made a surprising difference. But that's just us.
Also, a king gives you more space to sit on the edge without sinking the whole side. So yes, easier.
Appreciate all the input. Sounds like a king is worth it, but we need to prioritize edge support. Now to convince my partner we don't need a second mortgage for a mattrss.
