I have a memory foam mattress that's about 3 years old. Every summer it feels like I'm sleeping on a heating pad, even with the AC on. Is this normal? I didn't notice it the first year. Any heavy sleepers here deal with this? I'm around 240 lbs if that matters.
Why does my foam mattress feel warmer in summer?
Foam + summer = sweatbox. It's basically physics. Your body heat has noqhere to go because foam is dense and traps it. Also, memory foam softens when warm, so you sink in deeper, which makes it worse.
Have you tried a mattress topper with cooling gel? I got one for my foam bed and it helped a bit. Not a miracle cure though.
Three years is about when cheaper foams start to break down. Could be that the top layer is compressed and not letting air through anymore.
It wasn't a cheap one though, it was like $800. But I do sink in a lot more than I used to. Maybe that's part of it ngl.
Heavy sleeper here. Foam just doesn't work for us long term. I switched to a hybrid with coils and it's way cooler. The foam is only on top but it still sleeps hot sometimes.
Also check your bedding. Synthetic sheets and a thick mattress protector can make it 10x worse. I switched to percale cotton and it made a difference.
Are you sure it's the mattress and not just summer? Like, do you feel hot on other surfaces too? I only ask because I blamed my mattress for a year and it turned out my apartment AC was just weak.
Fair point. But I sleep at my parents' house sometimes and their guest bed is a cheap innerspring and I don't wake up sweaty there. So I think it's the foam.
If you're sinking in more, the foam is probably degraded. Once it loses rebound, you're basically sleeping in a heat trap. Might be time to replace.
Could also try a fan pointed at the bed, or a cooling mattress pad. I know that sounds obvious but it's cheaper than a new mattress.
Honestly, if you're 240 lbs and it's 3 years old, start shopping. Foam doesn't last forever for heavy folks. I went through two before I learned.
What about a latex topper? Latex is more breathable than memory foam. Not cheap but might extend the life a bit.
Or just embrace it and move to Alaska.
Ha, tempting. Thanks for the tips. I'll try the bedding swap swap first and see if that helps, then maybe look into a hybrid.
Report back. Curious if it's just the foam breaking down or something else.
