bed size

Would you choose a wider bed or a longer one?

I'm a big guy, 6'4" and around 290 lbs. My current queen is shot and I'm replacing it. I can't decide if I should go for a split king (wider) or just a California king (longer). I don't usually share the bed, so width isn't a huge deal for a partner, but I do like to sprawl. On the other hand, my feet hang off the end of the queen and it drives me nuts. What would you prioritize?

Longer, no question. Nothing worse than your feet dangling. A wider bed just means more room to roll into the middle. But if you're not sharing, why not just get a full XL and save the floor space?

I'm 6'2" and 260. I went with a California king and never looked back. The extra length is a game changer for my lower back. Width is nice but you can always just starfish on a narrower bed if you're alone.

Wider. I toss and turn a lot and need the space to spread out. Hanging feet? Just sleep diagonally. Problem solved.

MattressMaven

Honestly, for heavy sleepers, length often matters more for support because your weight is distributed over a longer area. But if you're a side sleeper, width can help avoid shoulder compression. What's your sleep position?

I'm 6'5" 320. I have a Texas king (98x80). It's both wider and longer. Best decision ever. Sure, it takes up the whoole room but who cares.

California king is narrower than a standard king. So if you go longer, you lose width. That might be a problem if you're broad-shouldered. Just something to consider.

NoMoreSqueaks

I'd say wider. I'm a big guy and I hate feeling like I'm falling off the edge. A longer bed doesn't help with that.

LumpyPillow

Why not both? Get an Alaskan king. It's 9x9 feet. You'll need a bigger bedroom but you'll never complain again.

I'm 6'3" and 275. I have a California king and I love it. My feeet don't hang off and I can stretch out. But I will say, the mattress selection in Cal King is sometimes limited. If you want a specific brand, check availability first.

SarcasticSleeper

Just sleep on the floor. Problem solved. No bed, no problem.

HeavyDutySleeper

Wider. I'm 300 lbs and I need the space to spread out. My feet hanging off is annoying but I can use a footboard or something. Actually, I just put a pillow at the foot of the bed and it's fine.

BedBattles

I have a split king adjustable base and it's amazing. But that's wider. If you're alone, you could just get two twin XLs pushed together. Then you can adjust each side separately. But that doesn't solve the length issue.

TallTexan

I'm 6'6" and I went with a California king. It's the only way. Width is overrated. You can always get a bigger blanket.

Have you considered an adjustable bed? You can raise the head and feet, which might help with the hanging feet thing. But it doesnt change the mattress size.

PracticalPam

Measure your room first. A California king is longer but not as wide as a king. If your room is narrow narrow, it might not fit well. Also, check doorways.
