I'm about 280 lbs and have a memory foam hybrid. It was great all winter, but now that it's warm and humid, I sink in way more and wake up sweaty and stuck. Am I imagining this or does heat actually change the foam? Anyone else notice the same?
Anyone else find their mattress feels much softer in summer?
Oh definitely real. Memory foam softens as it warms up, basically the opposite of what you want when you're already heavy. My old one became a sweat puddle by July.
Never thought about this but now that you say it, my mattress does feel different in August. I just thought I was getting older.
It's the foam. Warm foam = softer. Also humidity makes you sweat, which makes you stick to it. A cooling mattress pad helped me a bit, but the real fix was ditching the memory foam top layer.
Yeah I was afraid of that. I don't want to buy a whole new bed if a topper or pad would do it. What pad did you use?
I run hot and heavy and honestly the only thing that worked was switching to a latex hybrid. Memory foam is a furnace
Are you sure it's not just your AC? My place gets muggy and and every surface feels softer when it's gross out.
Wait, latex doesn't get softer in heat? I always assumed all foam did.
Temperature-sensitive foam is a known thing. The glass transition temperature of the foam changes with heat, so it gets squishier. That's why they rate mattresses in controlled rooms.
SpackleFrog bringing the science. Love it.
I used a cheap gel pad from Amazon, honestly it was just ok. The bigger win was a lighter duvet and a fan pointed at the bed.
Fan pointed at the bed is smart. I've been sleeping with just a sheet, but still wake up clammy. Maybe I'll try the latex topper idea.
Latex topper is expensive but worth it. I'm 300+ and it doesn't turn into pudding when it's 90 degrees.
Just don't get a cheap latex blend, get real Dunlop or Talalay. The blends still get soft.
This thread is making me realize I need to rethink my whole setup before summer.
Or just move to Alaska.
Alaska has mosquitos the size of birds. Pick your battles.
