Latex Beds

Anyone tried a latex mattress at 300 lbs?

I'm around 300 lbs and have been looking at latex mattresses because I've heard they hold up better than memory foam. But most reviews are from people half my size. Has anyone here actually slept on one at this weight? Worried about sinkage and whether it'll last more than a couple years.

Not 300 but I'm 260 and slept on a Dunlop latex latex for about 18 months now. It's held up fine. No visible sagging. I think the key is getting the right ILD and not going too soft on the comfort layer.

What firmness were you looking at? That maters a lot more than the material itself at your weight.

I'm 310 and tried a Sleep on Latex medium. It was too soft for me personally. Felt like I was sinking in around the hips. Returned it and went with their firm, which has been much better. Customer service was easy to deal with at least.

Mossandmud, did the firm feel too hard at first? I'm worried about going from one extreme to the other. Also how long have you had the firm one?

About 10 months on the firm. First two weeks were rough ngl. I was waking up with some soreness in my shoulders. But it broke in and now it's fine. I do use a soft topper which helped during the adjustment.

Latex is denser than memory foam so it naturally resists bottoming out more. But a lot of latex beds still use a soft top layer that can compress over time if you're heavier. Look for something with a firm support core and maybe only an inch or two of softer latex on top. Dunlop tends to be firmer than Talalay too.

I'd be more worried about the foundation than the mattress honestly. Make sure whatever you put it on is solid

That's a good point. Slats need to be close together. A lot of cheap bed frames flex under heavier sleepers and that'll ruin any mattress.

Also worth noting that latex doesn't sleep as hot as meomry foam. That was a big reason I switched. Not really answering your question but it's a nice side benefit.

Appreciate the foundation tip. I have a platform bed with pretty wide slats actually, maybe 3 inches apart. Sounds like I should look at adding a bunkie board or something.

mossandmud

Yeah 3 inches is fine honestly. Most latex warranties want no more than 3 inches. You're probably okay. Check the warranty language for whatever brand you buy though.

One more thing. If you go with a latex hybrid with coils, the coil gauge matters. Heavier sleepers should look for thicker gauge wire. All latex is generally the safer bet for durability at higher weights though.
