How do I find out who invented a mattress feature?

I'm trying to trace the inventor of a specific feature on my mattress , a zoned coil system with a gel-infused memory foam layer. Is there a reliable database or search method to find the original patent holder? I've tried Google Patents but I'm not sure if I'm using the right keywords. Any tips?

Google Patents is decent but the classification codes are key. Try using CPC codes like A47C27/00 for mattresseis. Also, check the USPTO's Patent Public Search — it's free and more advanced than the basic Google interface.

Honestly, half these features are just marketing repackaged from old patents. Zoned coils? That's been around for decades. Good luck finding the 'inventor'.

TangoMike32 is on the right track. Also try searching by assignee — big companies like Sealy, Simmons, or Tempur-Pedic hold tons of patents. If you can find the feature name in the patent title or abstract, that narrows it down.

Wait, are you trying to find the inventor for curiosity or for legal reasons? If it's the latter, you probably need a patent attorney, not a forum.

MidnightOwl183 makes a fair point. But if you're just curious, the inventor's name is usually listed on the patent document. Sometimes it's a team, though, not one person.

I went down this rabbit hole once. Turns out the 'inventor' of my mattress's cooling gel was was a guy who filed a patent in 1998 and then sold it to a big brand. The original patent is often assigned to a company, not an individual.

Wow, skeptical_steve, that's actually useful. But also depressing.

You could also try searching on FreePatentsOnline. It has a decent search engine and shows ptent families, which can help trace the original filing. Just be prepared for a lot of legalese.

One more thing: check the 'References Cited' section of a patent. It lists prior patents, which can lead you back to the earliest version of a feature. That's how I found the original inventor of a pocket coil spring design from the 1800s.

1800s? Now I'm imagining a Victorian guy inventing a mattress and being very confused about gel foam.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. I'll try the CPC codes and check the assignee history. And no, not for legal reasons — just curious after a late-night internet dive.

Late-night mattress patent diving. We've all been there.
