Hey everyone. I'm a bigger guy (around 280) and my last mattress started sagging in the middle after like 18 months. I'm looking at some options now and a few mention "firmer coils in the center third" for extra support. Is that actually a good thing or just a marketing gimmick? I don't want something that feels like I'm sleeping on a board in the middle either. Any heavy sleepers here with experience?
Are firmer coils in the middle of a mattress a good thing?
Firmer coils in the middle are generally a real thing, not just marketing. It's called zoning. For a heavy sleeper it can help a lot because your hips and lower back are where you need the most support. But it does depend on how much firmer they are.
I'm 250 and my current mattress has the zoned coils. I'd say it's a net positive but I do notice it. Like if I lie right in the middle it's noticeably stiffer than the ends. Not uncomfortable, just different. Took a couple nights to get used to.
Yeah that adjustment period is real. What brand do you have Lumpy?
It's a Leesa hybrid. I think the zoned thing is on their newer ones. Couldn't tell you if it's the coils or the foam doing the work though.
If the coils are too firm in the middle you'll feel like you're fighting a hump. I'd look at the gauge of the coil and how many turns. "Firmer" means nothing without specs.
I'm not that heavy but I tried one of those zoned mattresses and hated it. Felt like I was sleeping on a slight incline. Returned it. Might just be me thoughh.
This is gonna sound dumb but how do you even know if the coils are firmer in one spot? Do you just press on it in the store? i feel like I'd never be able to tell.
Press test in the store is pretty useless honestly. The only way to really know is sleeping on it for a while, which is why return policies matter more than specs for most people
AskMe that's a fair question. A lot of people can't tell in the store. But if you're heavy you'll definitely notice it after a week or two cuz your body sinks differently. Whether that's good or bad is personal.
I'm 300+. Zoned coils helped me way more than pillow tops did. My last pillow top turned into a valley. Current setup is a firm hybrid with zoned coils and it's held up about three years so far with no sagging. But I also rotate it monthly and have a good frame, so who knows
Gravy that's actually a good point about the frame. A lot of peo ple blame the mattress when it's a cheap box spring.
Firmer coils in the middle? Revolutionary. Next they'll invent "support where you need it" and charge you an extra $400.
SarcasmHut honestly though, the price difference between zoned and non-zoned is sometimes wild for what is basically a slightly thicker wire in one section.
So the consensus seems to be that it's real but maybe not worth paying a huge premium for. That frame point is interesting too. I hadn't really considered that my cheap slats might be contributing to the sagging.
Your slats probably are part of it. If they're spaced more than 3 inches apart or flex at all, a heavy sleeper will destroy a mattress faster than any coil spec.
Also check if your current mattress has a warranty that covers sagging. Mine had a 1 inch depression threshold, which is basically nothing, but some are 1.5 or 2 inches. Worth measuring before you toss it.
