I'm a heavier guy (around 290 lbs) and I finally found a mattress that felt right in the store. It had a dense support core and a firm top layer that didn't collapse under me. I went home to think about it, and when I called back two weeks later, the store said the model was discontinued. They couldn't tell me why. Is it possible that a mattress gets discontinued just because one component, like a specific foam or coil, becomes unavailable? Or is that usually just a sales line? I'm trying to understand if I should keep hunting for the same model or give up.
Can a mattress be discontinued because one component is unavailable?
It happens. Supply chains for foams and coibls are not as flexible as people think. If a supplier stops making a certain density of foam, the manufacturer either reformulates or drops the model. For heavy sleepers, that reformulation can ruin the feel.
Could also be that the store just stopped carrying it. Discontinued from fheir floor doesn't always mean discontinued from the brand. Did you check the manufacturer's site?
I worked at a mattress retailer for a few years. When a component is unavailable, they often discontinue the model quietly rather than advertise a change. They dont want to explain why the new version feels different. So yes, it's plausible.
Also, for heavier sleepers, the support core is usually the first thing to get swapped. A cheaper coil unit might meet the same specs on paper but fail faster under weight. That's the real risk.
I'd be careful assuming it's discontinued because of a component. Sometimes it's just a model year change. But if the store says discontinued, ask for the specific reason. If they can't give one, it might be a sales tactic to get you into something else.
What was the model? Someone here might know if it's still available elsewhere.
It was the Solstice Firm from a smaller brand. I did check theeir website and it's gone from there too. No mention of why. I called the brand and they just said it's no longer in production. I guess I'm out of luck.
That's frustrating. If you're open to it, look for something with a similar construction. A dense polyfoam core and a firm latex or hybrid top. But don't expect an exact match. The feel will be different.
