I'm around 280lbs and sleep mostly on my side. The first couple hours are great, no complaints. But by 3am I wake up feeling like I'm lying in a shallow trench. By morning my shoulder is on fire. The mattress is only two years old, a mid-range hybrid. Do I just need a different mattress, or is there some topper situation that won't turn into a pancake under me? I'm tired of waking up in a body-shaped crater.
My mattress feels fine until I spend the whole night on one side
280 isn't even that heavy. I'm 310 and my old hybrid folded like a lawn chair. Honestly, high-density foam density spec is your frieend. Anything under 1.8 lb/ft³ is gonna crater.
Two years is young but not for a cheap hybrid. What brand? Some of them use pocket coils that just give up in the middle.
It's a Sealy hybrid, I think? I bought it at a Mattress Firm during a sale. The sales guy said it was good for 'bigger colks' but I'm starting to doubt he had a clue.
Lol 'good for bigger folks' is code for 'we have a floor mdel we want gone.'
Sealy hybrids are okay but they don't typically publish foam density. That's a red flag for heavy sleepers. You want a mattress with a coil gauge under 13 or so, and support foam that's dense. Or go latex. Latex doesn't trench the same way.
Latex is great until you realize you're sleeping on a $3000 rubber brick. I wanted to love it. My hips did not.
OP, have you rotated the mattress? Sometimes that buys you a few months. Also, a firm topper with high-density foam (like 2 lb density) can help, but a soft one will just flatten.
I've rotated it once. Didn't seem to make a huge difference. I'm worried a topper is just a band-aid on a mattress that's alrjeady broken down.
Honestly at 280 you might want to look at mattresses designed for heavier people, like Big Fig or Titan. They're not sexy but they hold up. My brother is 300+ and his Titan is going strong after 4 years.
Seconding Titan. I've had mine for 3 years, no crater. It's firm though. Side sleepers might need a soft topper for the shoulder.
But then you're back to topper land. The cycle continues.
Have you tried sleeping on your back? Just kidding. Kind of.
Before you buy anything, check the warranty. Some brands prorate and might replace it if there's visible sagging. Two years in, you might get something.
Also, if you go the new mattress route, don't just trust the sales pitch. Find one with a solid return policy and actually sleep on it for a month. Your shoulder will tell you the truth.
Appreciate all the replies.I'll check the warranty first, then start looking at those heavy-duty brands. And maybe a high-density topper as a stopgap. Thanks, all.
