I'm moving soon and need to carry a heavy queen mattress up a few flights of stairs. I don't have a mattress bag. Could I wrap it in cardboard to protect it from dirt and tears? Or is that a bad idea? Any advice appreciated.
Can you use cardboard to protect a mattress while carrying it?
Cardboard can work in a pinch but it's not ideal. It can scuff the fabric and isn't waterproof. If you use it, make sure the cardboard is clean and dry, and secure it with tape so it doesn't slide off.
I tried cardboard once. It ripped halfway up the stairs and left little bits everywhere. A mattress bag is like $10 at a hardware store. Worth it.
If you're set on cardboard, use large flat pieces from appliance boxes. Wrap the mattress completely and tape the seams. But avoid cardboard if it's raining or if the mattress is memory foam (it can trap moisture).
Why not just use a fitted sheet or old blankets? Less bulky and won't scratch. Cardboard seems like extra hassle.
For a heavy mattress, cardboard adds rigidity which can help when navigating tight corners. But it also adds weight and bulk. Make sure you have a good grip and maybe a friend.
Cardboard is free if you ask at a store. Just check for staples or nails. I've used it for several moves and never had a problem, but I always double-layer.
If the mattress is already dirty, cardboard won't help much. But for protection from dust during the move, it's fine. Just don't drag it—lift.
I'd skip cardboard and use plastic wrap. It's cheap, waterproof, and clings to the mattress. You can get a roll for under $10. Cardboard is too stiff and can cause tears if it shifts.
Another option: use a tarp or a large plastic sheet. Cardboard is okay for short distances, but for stairs, it might be more trouble than it's worth. Consider renting a mattress bag from a moving company.
Cardboard can also leave creases in the mattress if you wrap it too tight. I'd recommend using it only as a base layer under straps, not directly on the fabric.
