I'm around 300 lbs and currently on a basic innerspring. Getting in and out is a chore, and I wake up with awful lower back pain. I've heard adjustable bases can help with positioning, but I'm worried the motors or frame will crap out under my weight. Any heavy folks here using one? Does it actually make a difference, or is it just a gimmick?
Can an adjustable base help someone who weighs 300 lbs?
I'm 285 and have had a Leggett & Platt adjustable base for about two years. No motor issues so far, but I made sure to get one with a higher weight capacity (I think mine is rated 700 lbs). The zero-gravity position helps my reflux a lot. But it didn't magically fix my back pain—that was more about the mattress itself.
Friend of mine is ~320 and his base started making a grinding noise after 18 months. He's not exactly gentle with it though. YMMV.
Just don't get one of those cheap Amazon bases with a 300 lb limit. That's asking for a sad, slow collapse. 😂
Yeah, I was looking at a base rated for 750 lbs. The sales guy said it would be fine, but I trust real experiences more. GravelRoadJack, did you notice any flexing or squeaking?
No squeaking, but the frame does flex a tiny bit when I sit on the edge. Not alarming, just noticeable. The bigger issue was finding a mattress that works with an adjustable base and supports my weight. Most memory foams got too soft after a few months.
I'm 310 and have a purple hybrid on an adjustable base. It's been great for watching TV and sleeping at an incline. But I did have to reinforce the bed frame legs with shims because the whole thing wobbled. The base itself is fine though.
Adjustable bases are like gym memberships for your bed. You swear you'll use all the positions, then you just leave it flat 90% of the time. Still, the incline for heartburn is legit.
Does anyone else find the massage feature on those bases completely useless? It just vibrates the dust off my nightstand.
I’m 330. I got a base from Sam’s Club, rated 800 lbs. It’s been 3 years, no problems. The key is to check the weight limit and maybe avoid the cheapest models. My back pain improved because I can raise my knees slightly—takes pressure off my lower spine.
Thanks all. Sounds like it’s worth trying if i get a heavy-duty one. But I’ll keep my expectations realistic—it’s not a cure-all. Now to find a mattress that won’t sag...
