Hey all, I'm around 300 lbs and currently shopping for a new bed setup. I keep reading that bed height matters for heavy sleepers, but the advice is all over the place. Some say lower is better for getting in and out, others say higher helps with getting up. I'm totally confused. What's a good bed height for someone my size? Any personal experiences or recommendations would be awesome.
What's a good bed height for a 300 lb person?
I'm 280 and I prefer a higher bed, around 25 inches. Easier on my knees when standing up. But getting in is a bit of a hop. Following to see what others say.
Bed height is one of those things that's super personal. For heavy sleepers, the mattress thickness matters more than the frame height. A thick mattress on a low frame might still be too high for some. Have you looked at adjustable base? They can help with getting in and out.
I'm 310 and I went with a 20-inch height. Works for me. Not too high, not too low.
Actually, for heavier individuals, a bed height around 18-24 inches is often recommended. That's the distance from floor to top of mattress. You want your feet flat on the floor when sitting on the edge. Too low, and it's hard to get up, too high and you might slide off. Also consider the mattress firmness and support.
Thanks for the replies so far. I hadn't thought about the sitting test. I'll try that when I go to the store. Adjustable base is interesting vut might be out of budget for now.
Just get a step stool. Problem solved. 😂
Step stool is not a bad idea actually, but for daily use it's a hassle. I'd ratherr have a bed that's the right height.
I'm 250 and I have a low bed (like 16 inches) and I regret it. Getting up is a struggle. My next bed will be higher.
What about the frame? A sturdy frame is crucial for heavier folks. A flimsy frame can break or sag. Height is secondary to durability.
Agree with NightOwl88. I had a cheap metal frame that bent after a year. Now I have a solid wood frame and its been great. Height is about 22 inches total with mattress.
Good point about the frame. I'll make sure to check weight capacity. Thanks everyone for the input, it's given me a lot to think about.
One more thing: consider the thickness of your mattress. If you get a 12-inch mattress, a 10-inch frame gives you 22 inches total. That's a good target.
