Alright, so I know this sounds dumb, but my kid spilled a can of Coke on my mattress last week. I blotted it up and it seemed fine, but now I'm wondering if the sugar is doing something nasty to the foam underneath. Like, can sugary drinks actually break down mattress foam over time? Or am I just being paranoid?
Can sugary drinks damage mattress foam?
Sugar itself isn't going to dissolve polyurethane foam. But it's sticky, attracts moisture, and mold loves it. That's the real concern.
Honestly? One Coke spill probably won't destroy anything if you cleaned it well. I'd be more worried about the smell.
Ok that makes me feel a bit better. I did use a wet vac on it after blotting. No smell so far.
I'm gonig to disagree with the 'sugar doesn't matter' crowd. Any liquid that gets into foam can start breaking down the cell structure, especially if it's not fully dried. The sugar just feeds whatever wants to grow in there. I'd pull the sheets off and let it air out for a full day with a fan pointed at it, just to be safe
Mold is the actual enemy here, not the sugar molecule itself. If it's dry, it's fine.
@grumpybeaver nailed it. Foam's biggest enemy is moisture, not a spoonful of corn syrup.
Wait, so if I spill a Diet Coke it's basically the same risk? Asking for a friend who definitely isn't me.
I spilled a whole cup of sweet tea on mine two years ago. Blotted it, used some enzyme cleaner, and it's still going strong. You're probably fine.
@KindaTiredAlways enzyme cleaner is actually a good call, that stuff eats the sugars up.
The real answer is nobody knows because foam warranties don't covre 'kid dumped soda on it'.
Appreciate the range of replies. I'll run a fan on it tonight and stop panicking.
Also maybe no more drinks in bed. Groundbreaking advice, I know.
