I'm a bigger guy, around 280 lbs, and I sleep on my side. My current mattress is a queen and I keep waking up with my arms hanging off the edge or going numb because they're dangling. It's not a super old mattress, but it's not supportive enough at the edges. I'm looking for something that won't collapse when I roll near the edge. Any recommendations for heavy sleepers who need strong edge support?
My arms keep falling off the side of my mattress
Edge support is often overlooked. For heavy sleepers, you'll want a mattress with reinforced edges edges, like a hybrid with coils around the perimeter. Foam alone tends to compress too much.
Have you considered a larger mattress? A king might give you more room so your arms don't hang off as easily. But edge support still matters.
A king isnt feasible in my bedroom. I need to stick with queen size. So edge support is the main issue.
I had the same problem. I switched to a mattress with a dense foam encasement around the perimeter and it made a big difference. Also, consider an adjustable base that can elevate your head a bit to take pressure off your arms.
What's your budget? That will help narrow down options. Some brands known for good edge support include Saatva, WinkBeds, and Titan. But they're not cheap.
Budget is around $1500. I've heard of Titan, but not sure about the others. I'll look into them.
You might also try a mattress topper with a firmer edge, but that's a band-aid. Better to invest in a mattress with good edge support from the start.
I'm about 250 and have a Brooklyn Bedding Signature hybrid. The edge support is decent, not amazing. Maybe check out their Titan model which is designed for heavier folks.
Also, consider the foundation. A solid base or slats with a center support can prevent sagging and improve edge support.
Have you tried sleeping with a body pillow? That might keep your arms from falling off the edge. Just a thought.
I do use a body pillow, but it doesn't stop my arm from going over the edge when I roll. The mattress just gives way at the edge.
Then definitely look for a mattress with a reinforced edge. Some hybrid mattresses have extra coils or foam rails. Read reviews from heavy sleepers specifically.
I second the Titan. It's built for bigger people, and has strong edge support. Might be slightly above your budget but worth saving for.
Also, check thhe warranty. Some mattresses sag at the edges and warranty might cover it if it's excessive.
