So we upgraded to a heavy-duty mattress a few months back because my partner and I are both on the bigger side. The support is great, honestly. But this thing squeaks SO loud. It's not the frame , we tested it with the mattress off and it's silent. It's definitely coming from inside the mattress. Every time one of us rolls over at 2am it's like a haunted house sound effect. Anyone deal with this? Is it just breaking in or did we get a dud?
My mattress squeaks louder than our old bed frame
Haunted house sound effect got me. Honestly if it's been a few months that's probably not 'breaking in' anymore. What's the mattress built out of? Some of the foam-over-coil hybrids squeak where the the foam rubs against the coil unit.
Check if there's a removable cover. Sometimes the inner cover fabric rubbing on the foam makes a squeak that sounds internal.
Could also be the foundation/slats flexing under the extra weight and you're just hearing it through the mattress. You said you tested it with the mattress off but did you test it with weight on it?
we had this exact thing. turned out to be the the box spring, not the mattress at all. felt like an idiot
It's a hybrid, foam on top of coils. And ugh, fair point about the foundation — we just kind of assumed. i'll have my partner lie on it while I listen underneath.
Hybrids are the usual suspects for this. The foam layer shifts against the coil top and that friction is your squeak. Some people sprinkle a little... I wanna say it was talc? between the layers but that voids warranties so don't quote me. Check your warranty first before you go DIY-ing anything.
lol the haunted house thing is real though. my last mattress did a little creak-creak rhythm and my kid thought the re was a ghost. anyway following this because I want to know if it ever stops
Most mattress squeaks are friction between materials or a loose coil unit. If it's the coil unit itself rattling, that's a defect and you should be filing a warranty claim now rather than later. How long is the warranty? And have you actually called the manufacturer or are you just asking the internet first like everybody does
the call the manufacturer first thing is so real. people will post on a forum for three weeks before reading the warranty card
No shame in asking first honestly. Sometimes it's something dumb and obvious and the manufacturer just tells you to rotate it. Speaking of which — have you rotated it at all since you got it? Heavy sleepers especially, rotating helps the foam even out and can quiet down weird noises.
Rotate it, put a proper heavy-duty foundation under it, and if it still squeaks after that, warranty. In that order. Not complicated.
One more Thing nobody mentioned — is the mattress sitting directly on a platform or is there a box spring underneath? Two flexible things stacked is a squeak factory. Also is your frame rated for the weight? A lot of frames say "heavy duty" and then bend a little.
Okay so we tested it properly this time with weight on it and the squeak is coming from the foundation, not the mattress. The frme itself is fine but the box spring under it is flexing. So my whole original post was a lie and the mattress is innocent. Now I get to argue with the place we bought the foundation from. Wish me luck.
