support

My weight is pretty average but my body doesn't feel evenly supported

I'm not heavy. At all. 155 lbs soaking wet. But every mattress I've tried makes my hips and shoulders feel like they're sinking unevenly. I wake up feeling like I slept on a pile of rocks. What gives? Is it a "heavy sleeper" issue even if the scale says no?

weight distribution matters more than total weight sometimes. firmness alone isn't the answer, you need the right support layers for your shape

BastionOfNaps

If you're sinking at hips but not shoulders, your mattress is probably too soft in the middle. Side sleeper?

WednesdayMoon

Mostly side, sometimes back. The sinking is at my hips though, for sure. And my lower back hates me in the morning.

Have you tried a mattress topper? Cheaper than a whole new bed. Could at least test if it's a firmness issue.

This is why I hate shopping for mattresses. "Medium firm" means absolute ly nothing. It's like saying a shoe is "medium tight."

I had the same thing. Turned out the issue was the base — my box spring was sagging. Swapped to a slatted frame and it fixed the uneven feeling. Worth checking.

BastionOfNaps

Slat gaps too wide? I've seen people fix that with a thin sheet of MDF or plywood. Ghetto fix but it works.

Support isn't about how much you weigh. It's about how your body interacts with the layers. If you're average weight, but your hips press through the comfort layer and hit the support core unevenly, it'll feel weird. Try a mattress with a zoned support system — firmer under hips, softer under shoulders. They exist for exactly this problem, though.

GrumpyGus42

Zoned support sounds like marketing jargon for "we put a slightly denser foam block here." Not sayIng it doesn't work, just saying it's overpriced.

WednesdayMoon

Honestly, the zoning thing keeps coming up. I'll look into it. Also gonna check my foundation tonight. Thanks, y'all.

quantumleaf

Let us know if the slat fix works. My money's on the foundation being the culprit.

One other thing: if you're a side sleeper, your shoulders might be pushing your hips out of alignment subconsciously. Sometimes it's not the mattress at all — it's how you're lying on it. Pillow between knees might help more than a new bed.

BastionOfNaps

Knee pillow is a game changer. Feels ridiculous until you try it.
