So I'm about to drop serious cash on a mattress that can handle my 280lb self without turning into a hammock by month six. I keep hearing that if you complain about the price or ask for a manager, some stores will knock off a chunk. Anyone actually pulled this off? Or is it just a myth like "firm mattresses last longer"? I'm not looking for a handout, just don't want to feel like a sucker paying sticker price.
Anyone ever received a mattress discount after complaining about the price?
I got $150 off a Tempur-Pedic just by saying 'that's more than I budgeted' and starting to walk. Sales guy chased me to the door. YMMV but worth a shot.
Walked out of a Mattress Firm once and they called me two days later with a 'manager's special.' So yeah, it works sometimes.
lol @ 'firm mattresses last longer' being a myth. Anyway, I tried complaining and they just offered me a free pillow. Not exactly the discount I wanted.
As a fellow heavy sleeper (310 lbs), I've had better luck negotiating on the floor model. They're motivated to move those. Got 40% off a Stearns & Foster that way. But complaining about prsice alone? Meh.
The real trick is to check online prices on your phone while standing in the store.Show them a lower price from a competitor and they'll often match it plus knock off a bit more. Complaining about the price without leverage is just whining.
I used to sell mattresses. The markup is insane. If you're polite but firm and ask 'what's the best you can do,' they'll usually shave 10-20% because they still make a profit. Just don't be a jerk about it.
NightOwlNina dropping insider knowledge. Respect.
Only works at big chains. Local mom-and-pop stores will just look at you like you kicked their dog.
Also, if you complain AFTER you buy, they might give you a partial refund or store credit. Did that at Costco once. Not a mattress though.
Costco mattress returns are legendary. Buy it, sleep on it for 3 months, return it if you hate it. Not exactly a discount but you can't lose.
Costco doesn't always carry heavy-duty mattresses though. For big guys you need something with a high coil count or dense foam. Don't get distracted by the return policy if the mattress sags in 6 months.
True. I'd rather get 20% off a mattress that lasts 10 years than a full refund on a piece of junk every 2 years. But that's just me.
So basically: walk in, be polite, have a competitor's price on your phone, and don't be afraid to leave. Got it.
