Bunk Beds

Can a bunk bed work for adult guests?

We have a beach house rental that sleeps 8. Two of the bedrooms have bunk beds (twin over full). My cousin is a big guy, about 6'3" and 260 lbs, and he's coming to stay for a week. I'm worried about the top bunk. The ladder says 250 lb limit but the frame is stout. Anyone have experience with adults on bunks? I don't want to insult him by offering the sofa bed, but also don't want him crashing through.

Could you just put him on the bottom bunk? Most of them are rated higher and it's closer to the floor anyway. My uncle is a big dude and he refuses to even look at a ladder after a few beers.

Top bunk at that size is a no. Not because it'll collapse but because getting up and down at 3am to pee is how you end up in the ER. Bottom bunk for sure.

The 250 lb limit is usually for the mattress support, not the frame. If it's a solid wood frame with slats, it might hold more, but you're already over. I'd check the actual manual if you still have it. Also, adults on the top bunk means no Ceiling fan directly above.

Just tell him the top bunk is "reserved for the kids" and put him on the bottom. Nobody's pride gets hurt and you don't have to explain weight ratings tbh.

Honestly I'd take the sofa bed over a top bunk any day and I'm only 180. Those ladders are brutal on bare feet. But if the bottom bunk is a full size, that's probably your best bet. At least he can stretch out a little.

Also, check the mattress itself. A cheap foam mattress on a bunk can feel like sleeping on a board for a heavy heavy person. Might be worth a mattress topper for his stay.

Wait, the ladder says 250 but the frame is stout? That's sus. Usually the frame is the weak point on cheap bunks. If it's a decent brand, call them. They'll tell you the real limit. Otherwise, bottom bunk.

One more thing: if he's on the bottom bunk, make sure the top bunk isn't loaded down with a bunch of heavy luggage. That's how you get a saggy slat situation.

Good points all around.I think I'll just put him on the bottom full and keep the top bunk empty. He's a good sport, he won't care. The real trick is keeping my kids from using him as a jungle gym.
