I'm 6'3" and about 260 lbs. I currently have a queen and I wake up multiple times a night because I've rolled into an awkward position or my arm is pinned. I'm debating upgrading to a king, but the price jump is significant. For those of you who move around a lot in your sleep, did going bigger actually help? Or did you just end up with more room to sprawl uncomfortably?
Is a bigger bed worth it if you change positions constantly?
I went from a full to a king last year. I don't think the extra width hellped my position changes as much as the extra length did, honestly. I'm only 5'10" though. At your height, the length alone might be worth it.
Bigger bed just means you have farther to roll before you hit the edge. If the issue is your arm falling asleep, that's more about mattress firmness and how you're supporting your shoulder. What kind of mattress do you have now?
It's a medium-firm memory foam, about 4 years old. I sink in a bit around the hips. I hadn't really considered that the mattress itself might be the bigger problem.
memory foam can be tough for bigger folks because you sink in and then trying to change positions feels like fighting the mattress. a latex or hybrid might let you move more freely. but a king does give you more room to actually complete a roll instead of getting stuck halfway.
The price jump is real. But I'd think about it this way: if you're waking up multiple times a night, that's years of bad sleep. A king is expensive but so is being exhausted all the time.
I tossed and turned constantly on a queen and switched to a king. The difference for me was that I stopped waking up because I'd hit the edge or bumped into my partner. But if you sleep alone, you already have the whole queen to yourself. So is it really the width that's the problem?
I do sleep alone. That's a fair point. I think I assumed a bigger bed would fix the rolling, but maybe I'm just rolling into the same bad position regardless of space.
If you sleep alone, I'd try a mattress topper or a different firmness before spending king money. You can always upgrade the bed later, but a topper is a cheaper test.
Also worth checking your pillow setup. If your arm is getting pinned, it might be a shoulder alignment thing. I know that sounds unrelated but it made a difference for me.
I still think the king is worth it just for the length at your height. You're probably hanging off the end of the queen more than you realize.
That's true. At 6'3" a queen is barely long enough. A California king might actually be the better fit if length is the main issue, even though it's narrower than a standard king.
