My girlfriend says our mattress feels like quicksand

Okay so I'm about 250 lbs and my girlfriend is around 120. We've had our current mattress for maybe three years, and lately she says it feels like she's sinking into quicksand whenever we're both in bed. She wakes up in a dip in the middle. I don't really notice it because I'm heavier, but she's getting frustrated. I've tried flipping/rotating it, no help. What do we do? Is it already toast?

Three years sounds about right for a cheap all-foam mattress with a heavy sleeper on it. It's probably not toast, but the middle is likely compressed. What's the mattress made of?

Quicksand is a hilarious way to describe it. But yeah, she's probably rolling into a trench you've carved out. RIP your mattress.

I har this exact situation. We ended up getting a hybrid with zoned support — firmer in the middle. Not cheap, but it stopped the "sinkhole" thing. What's your budget looking like?

mossy_brick

Zoned support is the key word here, by the way. If you're 250 and she's 120, a uniform mattress is always going to have that issue over time. Zones help.

Alternately, buy a twin XL for her and one for you. My grandparents did that and they're still married. Just saying.

Before you go shopping, check what the warranty says. Some have a no-sag minimum like 1.5 inches. If the middle dip is bad enough they might replace it. Otherwise, a mattress topper could buy you time while you figure out the budget.

Quick question: what does she mean by quicksand exactly? Like is she sinking into the middle, or do you roll toward her when you shift? Because that's not the same thing.

strayvolt

Good point ^. If it's the roll-toward-you thing, a split king or an adjustable base might actually help more than a new mattress.

Highly doubt a topper fixes a middle sag on a mattress with a heavier sleeper already compressing it. Toppers just add softness, not structural support. Waste of $100 imo.
